From Sun To Rain

Phew!  It has been one busy 3 weeks!  I apologize that I haven't posted anything here for awhile, between finishing up a video project and school, I haven't had anytime to do anything!

Anyhow, here is something that I did today...

The Before

The After

The hardest part was getting the windows to light up.  Can anyone guess how I did it?

  1. Very nice one!

I really don't have a clue at how you did it. I suppose the darkening could have been edited by "levels", and the rain may have been a preset-effect (then again it may not have been!). I think for the windows I would have cut them out of the picture, made them all one layer, and then adjusted the lighting accordingly.

The good thing about Photoshop is that there's most likely more than just one way to do something!

  2. Thanks!

You are right...there is more than one way to do something in Photoshop!

The rain was made with fractal noise with a motion blur added to it. Then I layered the rain three different times to create some depth all with different blur settings.

You are close for the windows. I tried what you said first, but it turned out looking unrealistic. What I ended up doing was cutting the windows out and applying them to a new layer like you said. However, instead of adjusting the lighting accordingly, I just left them as they were and moved them above my color adjustment layers. This made them glow naturally!

However, there is one secret to this window glow that I learned while doing this. Notice in the original picture how the sun glints of certain windows and not others? Well, the windows that the sun glints off of are the ones that I used for the window glow. Had I used the ones that were just dark windows, you would have never noticed the glow! That was a very neat trick that I will be using the future!

As far as the coloring, I did a levels and a de-saturation on the image and added a black layer over the entire image to bring it to the amount that I wanted. I also added two or three fog layers.

If you guys would like to see exactly how I did it, I can make a tutorial!
